Son Harry Had Pneumococcal Meningitis In 2010
Aged 15 Weeks
Harry was 15 weeks old when he contracted meningitis. On the night he got sick, he went to bed as normal at around 8:30pm. He woke at around 10:30pm with a temperature, which wasn’t alarmingly high. I gave him Neurofen and it went down, but it kept coming back up. He was a bit irritable and crying, but I didn’t pass much remark as he had colic and cried a lot anyhow. This went on for a few hours. He had no other symptoms only a high temperature. I sat up with him until about 1:00am and his temperature had come down a good bit, so I decided to try and put him back to bed. He wouldn’t settle and at that stage he was swinging his head from side to side. He then let out a high-pitched cry, which was very frightening.
I knew then there was something wrong with him. I thought he had an ear infection or something like that. I never thought in a million years that he had meningitis. I bought him to accident and emergency, as it was the middle of the night and he was so small I didn’t want to leave him until the morning. I honestly thought I would be sent home. He slept in the car all the way to accident and emergency, but he got progressively worse when we arrived there. He was given the treatment for meningitis straight away and was transferred to ICU, where he spent 24 hours there. He was then kept in the paediatric ward for 2 weeks. He thankfully made a full recovery and has had no after effects.
